Globalization in Education

PDFPrintE-mail

To be successful global citizens, workers, and leaders, American students will need to be knowledgeable about the world, be able to communicate in other languages, and be informed and active about decisions and problems that impact the global community. This statement from the 2008 NEA National Summit on Raising Global Awareness in US Public Schools is reflected in Curry’s growing participation with international partners.

Thirty-two Curry faculty are currently engaged in international collaborations that focus on (1) applied research and published scholarship; (2) demonstrating and exchanging effective training approaches to be used with school professionals and young learners; (3) social and political activism to increase access and opportunities for those excluded from education in various parts of the world based on their gender, economic status, religion, or race.

Curry faculty now work with international colleagues in 29 countries that include the continents of Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, and South America. These partnerships provide opportunities for those Curry graduate students who are particularly interested in global scholarship and teaching. For example, students enrolled in Curry’s teacher preparation program who wish to teach in schools outside the United States are highly recruited into international schools. Curry School also partners with the Peace Corps to offer a Masters Degree to those Peace Corps workers who plan to work in educational settings and enroll in Curry courses prior to their Peace Corps assignment.

The focus on international work and globalization in education will continue to increase and intensify at Curry during the next five years. Listed below is additional information about a small number of programs and opportunities. This list will be expanded in the coming months to present a comprehensive summary of international opportunities at Curry.
